Preparing for the Landline Switch Off in 2025: What You Need to Know

The retirement of analogue phone networks was announced by the telecoms industry in November 2017, marking a significant development for telecommunications in the UK.

As we approach 2025, the old phone network, dating back to the 19th century, is being replaced with a modern, digital infrastructure. This transition marks a shift away from copper lines to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology, which uses the internet for phone services. While this change may not necessarily mean you have to replace your landline with a mobile phone, there are important adjustments to be aware of.

Straightforward transition for most
For the vast majority of consumers and businesses, this transition will be straightforward, with the aim of ensuring reliable home phone service and improved call quality. If you already have broadband, you can keep your landline without any action required. Your phone will be connected to your router or a new socket, and in some cases, an adaptor will need to be installed by your provider.

However, it's worth noting that some older models of phones may need to be replaced. Additionally, for those without broadband, your supplier will install a broadband connection at your home, with assurances from providers like BT and Virgin that customers will not have to pay any extra fees or charges.

Deadline: December 2025
The deadline for the landline switch-off is set for December 2025, although most providers have already begun the transition process. Your phone company will contact you when they are ready for you to make the change, providing guidance on the next steps. In the meantime, it's important to wait for your provider's communication and to keep them informed of any special circumstances you may have. For example, if you depend on your landline during power cuts or if you have equipment connected to your phone line, such as care alarms or fax machines.

Step into a digital future
As we move towards a digital future, staying informed and prepared for the landline switch-off will ensure a smooth transition for everyone. By following the guidance provided by your phone provider and addressing any specific needs or concerns, you can navigate this change with confidence and ease. Stay tuned for further updates and announcements as we approach the deadline in 2025.
